Yuba College is holding auditions for a late fall musical, Cinderella, A Traditional British Panto, on Tuesday and Wednesday October 11-12, 2016 at 6 p.m. at the Yuba College Theatre.
is a traditional British panto? “Traditionally performed at Christmas, with family audiences, British pantomime is now a popular form of theatre, incorporating song, dance, buffoonery,
slapstick, in-jokes, audience participation, and mild innuendo. There are a number of traditional story lines, and also a fairly well-defined set of performance conventions.
The prince or leading male role is traditionally played by a young woman – the “principal boy” part – and the older woman or “pantomime dame” by a man in drag.
The humour is aimed at both adult and child audiences, with innuendos for the adults that won’t be picked up by the children, and some humour for the children that just might go over the adult’s heads too!
Audience participation with the children occurs throughout the show, as they are encouraged to “boo” the villain and “cheer” the hero.”
Theatre Director James Gilbreath and Music Director Dr. Aya Ueda is casting up to 20 singing and non-singing roles (including principals and chorus) and all experienced acting, vocal students,
and residents are invited to audition. Performers interested in singing roles are asked to prepare a song, about 16 bars, and bring sheet their sheet music to the audition. Scripts are available at the Yuba College Library.
If cast, rehearsal schedule is Monday-Friday, 6-9 p.m. with further hours by arrangement. Performances are December 8-11, with daytime matinees on Friday December 9th and Sunday December 11th.
