Head Football Coach
mpomfret@yccd.edu Office: (530) 741-6841 In his first season at Yuba College, Coach Pomfret built a roster of 77 football players with only 7 of them returning from the season before. He was able to build this roster as a late hire with only 4 months on the job. Following the roster overhaul, Coach Pomfret and the 2023 49ers football program broke a 4-year-long losing streak, boosting the first win for the Yuba Football Program since 2019. Four of the 2023 49ers Football Program’s Sophomores were able to move on as mid-years to the 4-year level, with others moving on this spring. Most notably is WR Blake Hoban who will be playing Division 1 Football in the fall of 2024 for Appalachian State University. In addition, in the 2023 fall semester 23 student athletes within the 49ers program earned Dean’s List Honors, this does not include an additional 12 from spring 2023. Also, four players (Arturo Zaccarias Fr DE, Sebastian Shiveley So DE, Thomas Fasig So FS, George Baker Fr SS) earned All-Conference honors, Baker was 1st team All-Region as well.Notable Statistics:
- Top 10 team in the State for least number of penalties and penalty yards, out of 68 CCCAA teams.
- Top 12 team in the State for takeaways in the form of interceptions, out of 68 CCCAA teams (14)
- Top 12 team in the State for pass defense, out of 68 CCCAA teams (185 yard per game)
- 1st in Conference for least number of penalties and penalty yards averaging less than 6 penalties a game and less than 47 penalty yards against per game.
- 1st in Conference for least number of fumbles lost, only coughing the ball up once.

Allan Hancock College
Prior to becoming the Head Coach at Yuba College, Coach Pomfret was the Defensive Run-Game Coordinator / Academics Coordinator / Linebacker Coach for the Allan Hancock College Bulldogs Football Program. A vital part of the League Championship, and Strawberry Bowl Winning program, the 2022 Bulldogs run defense improved from 44th the year prior to 22nd in the State. Coach Pomfret’s defense also lead the league in sacks. Of Coach Pomfret’s Linebacker Room, 5 linebackers moved on to 4-year schools. 4 linebackers moved on to 4-year schools on a full ride scholarship. 2 linebackers moved on to division 1 programs: Jesse Garza (Eastern Illinois), Mason Midgett (University of South Dakota). 3 linebackers were All-League players (Jesse Garza, Devin Guggia, Jordan Fields).Feather River College
In 2021 Coach Pomfret moved to California to begin his CCCAA Career at Feather River College, as the Special Teams Coordinator and Linebacker Coach. Coach Pomfret’s Special Teams Unit never gave up a touchdown while orchestrating 3 touchdowns of their own for Feather River. His Special Teams Unit included 2 All-League players with Gio Morales (P) and Dajon Thomas (KR). Dajon Thomas was All-State as well in his return efforts. On Defense, Coach Pomfret developed an additional All-State player in Dominyke Edwards.University of Texas Longhorns
Coach Pomfret began his coaching career in 2019 as a Student Assistant with the University of Texas Longhorns. Working with the Tight End group his primary responsibility was running the Scout Team Defense Linebacker Room. Of those scout team linebackers (walk-ons) 3 of them ended up not only becoming starters at the University of Texas but earning full-ride scholarships (Court Jaquez, Jett Bush, Luke Brockermeyer). In practice and game prep with the Tight End group, Coach Pomfret helped the position coach in the development of such notable tight ends such as Cade Brewer (Seattle Seahawks) and Jared Wiley (2023 National Championship Competitor, TCU / 2024 Senior Bowl and NFL Combine Invite). In 2020 Coach Pomfret moved to the Offensive Line room, being named the Offensive Line Graduate Assistant. Again, he assisted in the development of many future NFL players such as Derek Kerstetter (2020 Buffalo Bills) and Sam Cosmi (Washington Commanders) as well as Christian Jones (2024 Senior Bowl and NFL Combine Invite). While with the Longhorns Coach Pomfret was part of two Alamo Bowl victories.Early Career & Military Service
Prior to his college football coaching career, Coach Pomfret coached at his High School Alma Matta’s Middle School Program, for the Carrol High School Patriots (Dayton, OH). Volunteering to help the next generation of Patriots for 2 seasons, it was in 2009 when Pomfret enlisted in the United States Army, as an Active Duty 19Delta Cavalry Scout. He did his Basic Training and OSUT at Ft. Knox Kentucky and would be stationed at Ft. Hood Texas with the 3rd Armored Cavalry & 3rd Cavalry Regiment. While with the Regiment, Coach Pomfret was deployed to Iraq in 2010 and 2011, as well as deploying to the Sinai Peninsula of Egypt in 2014. In his 6 year career Sergeant Pomfret earned a number of medals for his service to include but not limited to Two Army Commendation Medal, Military Outstanding Service Ribbon, The Army Good Conduct Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation, and 2 Iraqi Campaign Medals with Campaign Star, deploying to Diwaniya and Najaf Iraq. When not deployed Sergeant Pomfret continued to volunteer coaching at local middle schools, and when eventually choosing to leave the military in 2015 with an honorable discharge, began coaching at the high school level while earning his degrees. 5 years of Texas high school coaching experience included serving as Head Coach of Killeen Memorial Academy (2017) and won a State Championship with Austin Veritas Academy in (2018). Defensive Coordinator / Defensive Backs Coach:
Before his first season coaching in junior college football, Coach Newsom was coaching at a Local high school for 8 seasons prior to coming to the Yuba College 49ers in 2023.
Coach Newsom helps with the Strength and Conditioning program, as well as coaching the defensive backs.
At the end of the 2023 season, Coach Newsom was named Defensive Coordinator for the upcoming 2024 season.
The Yuba College 49er Defensive Backs were able to achieve Top 12 team in the State for takeaways in the form of interceptions, out of 68 CCCAA teams (14), 10 being from the defensive backs.
1st in Conference for interceptions (8). The Niners Defense was a Top 12 team in the State for pass defense, out of 68 CCCAA teams (185 yards per game).
2 Defensive backs were able to achieve 1st Team All-Conference.

Coach Newsom Played at a local high school for 3 seasons before coming to Yuba College in 2010 and 2011.
At the end of the 2011 season, He made his way down to Waxahachie, Texas to play for the SAGU Lions for the 2012 season.
QB Coach / Offensive Coordinator
Playing career:
Coach Gingery grew up in Springfield, Oregon; attended Springfield High School, and excelled in Football, Basketball, track, and baseball. While playing QB, Coach Gingery broke a number of state passing records. In addition, he ranked among the best in the state throwing the javelin on the track team, breaking records in track as well.
Following high school, Coach Gingery attended Western Oregon State University (now Western Oregon University) and played football (QB) on nationally ranked teams. In fall 2023, he was inducted into the WOU College Football Hall of Fame. After college, Coach Gingery played in the Professional Spring Football League and had a foray in the NFL over three years with the Los Angeles Raiders and Seattle Seahawks.
Coaching Career:
In 1993 at the young age of 25, Coach Gingery became the head football coach at Granada High School in Livermore, CA. In eight seasons, Gingery’s teams consistently ranked in the top 5 in the bay area. His offense and defense usually topped the greater SF area in yearly production. In his eight seasons at Granada High, he led them to 3 section championship games (1995, 1997, 2000). Following an undefeated 2000 season, Coach Gingery moved north to Redding to take over the Shasta High School Wolves (“I’m an Oregon boy, I hated Bay Area traffic!”). He quickly created Shasta High into a northern power; routinely breaking Northern California Section offensive records and leading the Wolves into the playoffs every year and the section Championship in 2010.
In 2016 Coach Gingery moved to Yuba City and became the head football coach for the Honkers. In his 25-year career as a high school head coach, Gingery compiled a record of 167-108-2, six section championship games, and missed the playoffs only once (1999). His overall league record exceeded a 75% winning percentage.

1995-PRESENT Highly regarded and sought-after high school and college clinic speaker throughout the country as a known expert in teaching QB play, program development, off-season strength and athletic development, special teams, offensive passing games, and offensive playbook development.
In addition, over his last five years at Yuba City High, Coach Gingery has helped guide 25+ athletes to play football at the collegiate level (six in division one programs).
Overall, over 80 of Coach Gingery’s players ended up at the college level.
David Wilson – WR/TE Coach
Prior to coaching David Wilson spent his high school days at Wheatland Union HS where he lettered in Football, Basketball, and Track (2005-2009). In 2009 after graduating high school in 2009 Coach Wilson enrolled in Yuba College (2009-2012) where he would letter in Basketball and Football.
Coach Wilson holds the All-Time Yuba Football Receiving Touchdown record in a season with 16 TDs. His talents on and off the field earned him All-State Honors as a TE/WR in both his Freshman and Sophomore campaign. From Yuba, Wilson attended Howard University on a full ride scholarship (2012-2014).
In his first season at Howard, Coach Wilson earned Second Team All-MEAC. In his senior season he played in the All-American Senior bowl in Minnesota. Coach Wilson had a run in the NFL and CFL joining the rookie minicamps of the Baltimore Ravens and Oakland Raiders (NFL), and Montreal Alouettes (CFL). Coach Wilson will be entering his 5th year of coaching at Yuba College, where he has coached Wide Receivers and Tight Ends. Coach Wilson has helped a number of Yuba 49ers follow his foot-steps in Division 1 football, including:

Coach Zed is in his 2nd year of working with the program and has 30+ years of football coaching experience as a head coach and assistant at the high school & Semi-pro levels.

as well as the Twin Cities Cougars team that won a PCFL Semi-Pro Championship.
