With over 15 seasons of coaching experience, beginning as a Middle School Coach, and rising all the way to division 1 FBS NCAA, Coach Mike Pomfret will begin his first season as Head Coach for the Yuba College 49ers in the 2023 season.  Starting his coaching career in 2007, it was after completion of his 6 years Active-Duty United States Army service that Coach Pomfret was able to dedicate his life and career to the coaching profession.  Since 2015, Coach Pomfret has been a Texas high school football Head Coach, as well as a State Champion.  Following his extensive high school coaching career, Coach Pomfret won 2 Alamo Bowl Championships while serving as a Graduate Assistant and in a Quality Control capacity with the University of Texas Longhorns football program from 2019-2020.  Once earning his master’s degree from the University of Texas, Coach Pomfret had his goals set on another State Championship and found one in the semi-professional ranks as State Championship in 2021, going 14-0 with the Leander (TX) Wolfpack.

“Coaching at multiple levels of talent and age, with different assets, resources, obstacles, and personalities at each one has prepared me for any challenge this career has thrown at me.  Some coaches will only coach JUCO, some only want to coach D1, many only do high school, or middle school; I am a FOOTBALL coach.  If there is a ball and some goal posts, I’ll find a way to organize a group of like-minded individuals and put forward a winning team.”

Coach Pomfret’s unique leadership approach has found success leading men half his age as a young coach, coaching middle school student-athletes, as well as grown men 10 years his senior during his time in the semi-pro ranks.  He credits his leadership philosophy to his time in the United States Army as a Squad Leader and NCO, leading soldiers both in garrison and on deployments with the 3rd Cavalry Regiment/3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, as a Cavalry Scout, conducting reconnaissance, direct action, and indirect action operations.  Coach Pomfret’s service record includes 2 Iraqi Campaign Medals, and was a unit recipient of the 2012 Draper Award, recognized annually to the United States Cavalries most elite reconnaissance unit.  This success and notoriety followed coach Pomfret into coaching.

“I have won at every level, and every stop in my career since making coaching a profession.  In doing so I have had the privilege to work for, and learn from, some tremendous coaches and professionals, as well as have the honor to coach some great players.  X’s & O’s, as well as Jimmy’s and Joe’s aside, it is CULTURE that wins Championships.  That is true in any state and at any level.”

Since moving to California in 21’ Coach Pomfret has won 2 league championships in the CCCAA and directly coached 10 All-League players and 2 All-State Players.  In 2022 as the Linebackers Coach and Defensive Run-Game Coordinator for the Allan Hancock Bulldogs, all 3 of Coach Pomfret’s starting Linebackers received All-League Honors and full scholarship offers.  Getting his players ‘out’ and finding them 4-year student-athlete opportunities is something Coach Pomfret takes great pride in.  He looks forward to doing so for the student athletes of Yuba College, as well as building a proud winning tradition and culture for the 49ers football program.
