FIREFIGHTER 1 ACADEMY INFORMATION
Accredited by the California State Fire Marshall’s Office.  The Firefighter 1 academy provides student with the basic skills and knowledge to work in the fire service.  The California State Firefighter I curriculum will be followed.  This academy provides training in basic concepts including fire department organization, fire control, equipment operation, prevention, protection, hose, nozzles, and breathing apparatus.  Physical training is part of the curriculum.  Upon successful completion of all requirements, students will receive IFSAC/ProBoard certification as a Firefighter 1.

FIREFIGHTER 1 ACADEMY APPLICATION PROCESS & TIMELINE

Step 1. Complete fire academy application and submit via email no later than 5pm on April 26, 2024.  Ensure you receive a confirmation email that your application was received.  Incomplete applications will not be accepted.  Please note: applicants will be accepted on a first come, first serve basis.

Step 3. Review program costs and fees and apply for financial aid if needed, Financial Aid – Yuba College (yccd.edu) Connect with WIOA: Workforce Innovation Opportunity Act (WIOA) | Yuba College (yccd.edu)

Step 4. Await confirmation of acceptance into the fire academy. Notification of acceptance to the academy will be sent via email by Friday, May 3, 2024 and we will request your confirmation. If you do not confirm, your seat will be given to the next applicant.  Acceptance letter will provide information regarding items to purchase and tasks to complete.

     If confirmed into the academy, complete the remaining steps:

Step 5. Meet with counselors to file an abbreviated educational plan if not already enrolled at Yuba College.  Any students who have attended Yuba College previously will be contacted by a facilitator regarding college programs for Certificate or A.S. degrees.  This will be a scheduled zoom meeting, details to come.

Step 6. Complete medical history, Par-Q and medical exam, due by July 25, 2024

Step 7. Purchase uniforms, Personal Protective equipment, PT clothing, and books, due by July 25, 2024

Step 8. Attend a required orientation meeting via Zoom and Mandatory in-person orientation the weekend before the academy begins.

Step 9. Prepare for academy start on August 26, 2024

 

FIREFIGHTER 1 PROGRAM COSTS

Material and Uniform Costs

Some personal protective equipment will be provided by the Academy, with the exception of footwear, hoods, and gloves (for health reasons). Students must also provide their own uniforms. Specifications and vendors for these items will be provided upon being accepted for enrollment in the Academy.

 

Financial Aid

Some students may be eligible to receive financial aid. Both Board of Governor’s Fee Waivers and Federal Financial Assistance may be viable options for students seeking assistance. Books

Firefighter Academy books will be available for purchase online and at the Yuba College Bookstore. Details will be made available in the Acceptance Letter. Once accepted and enrolled in the course, go to the course link in your Yuba College login and the books assigned to the academy will be linked to your course registration. Fees

Enrollment fees, as set by the California State Legislature, are $46 per unit and are subject to change. Students will be responsible for the difference in enrollment fees if such changes are enacted by the Legislature. The total cost for the Firefighter 1 academy is approximately $3,000 – $4,000 dollars.
