Sous Chef at Tings Refuge in Yuba City
What lead you to the Culinary Program?
When I first came to Yuba College I was on track for the Nursing Programs. While taking my pre req’s I was on campus from 9-5 Monday through Friday. I had discovered Flavors and spoke to a few students after I had finished my delicious burger. The very next semester I had taken a counseling class and one thing that stuck out the most was that the instructor, Valerie Harris, said “do what you love”. And, as much as I want to help others, I realized shorty after doing a CNA externship that this was not what I love. I love food.
The Culinary Arts program has allowed me to take my love an passion for food and turn it into a career. I truly now know what it is like to get paid to do what you love.
What were you doing before coming to Yuba College?
Before attending Yuba College I was a server at Pearl on The River in Sacramento. An amazing place for farm to fork dining.
What advice do you have for current or prospective students?
My advice is this: do what you love! Don’t become something to please your parents, grandparents, or guardian. Their career goals for you are not the same as your own.
