First-Generation Student Celebration: First-Generation College Student Day celebrates the signing of the Higher Education Opportunity Act of 1965, which among other things, established TRIO and financial aid programs such as Pell and low-interest loans. To celebrate Yuba College students, faculty, and staff who are the first in their families to go to college, the Student Support Programs such as Campus Life, EOPS, Financial Aid, MESA, and TRiO, are coming together to host an event on November 8th—the national First-Generation Celebration Day.
What does it mean to be a First-Generation College Student? Being a first-gen student means that your parent(s) did not complete a 4-year college or university degree, regardless of other family member’s level of education. Older siblings and family members who attended college may be a great resource as you navigate your college journey!
Did you know? Yuba College served 53% unduplicated First Gen students in 2022/2023
Celebrate with us by adding our Zoom background during your meetings between November 6 through November 10, I am First-Gen Zoom Background
Add a “Thank You” note: I Am First-Gen! Thank those who have supported you and encouraged you to never give up on your first-gen journey. Let them know how much you appreciate them and the impact they’ve had on your life!
