Curriculum Committee Tabling Policy
Approved: March 2, 2018
When an item is placed on the agenda
After a course, degree, or certificate has received SLO approval, DE approval (if relevant), and Dean approval, it is placed on the Curriculum Committee agenda for the first time.
Attendance requirement
The originator (or an appropriate proxy) must attend the Curriculum Committee meeting where the course, degree, or certificate is discussed.
If the originator (or proxy) cannot attend
- If the originator notifies the Curriculum Co-Chair prior to the meeting that they cannot attend, the course, degree, or certificate will be postponed to the next meeting.
- If the originator (or an appropriate proxy) does not attend the meeting and does not communicate with the Curriculum Co-Chair in advance, the course, degree, or certificate will be tabled and placed on the agenda for the next Curriculum Committee meeting.
Possible outcomes after discussion
During the Curriculum Committee meeting, the course, degree, or certificate will be discussed. Based on this discussion, one of the following outcomes will occur:
- The course, degree, or certificate needs no (or relatively minor) revisions and is approved for the first time by the Curriculum Committee.
- The course, degree, or certificate needs revisions and is sent back to the originator so the recommended revisions can be made. The item will be tabled until revisions are completed and the originator has re-launched the item in eLumen.
- The Curriculum Committee rejects the course, degree, or certificate.
Three tablings rule
If a course, degree, or certificate is tabled three times (either due to lack of attendance or extensive edits required), it will be rejected in eLumen. This requires the originator to start the review process over.
After local approval: submission to the state
After the course, degree, or certificate is approved by the Curriculum Committee and the Board of Trustees, it is submitted to the State Chancellor’s Office.
Requests for additional information
Occasionally, additional information (beyond what is in the Course Outline of Record) is required. In those cases, the course, degree, or certificate originator will be asked by the curriculum specialist to provide additional information.
If the originator does not respond to the curriculum specialist’s request within four contract weeks, the item will be rejected in eLumen and the originator will need to start the review process over.
Examples
- If an originator launches a course, degree, or certificate and fails to attend three meetings in a row, the item will be un-launched.
- If an originator launches a course, degree, or certificate and fails to attend two meetings in a row, during the third meeting the item must either be approved or it will be rejected.
- If an originator launches a course, degree, or certificate and it requires substantial revisions,
those revisions must be completed by the third meeting, where the item will either be approved or rejected. - If an item is approved by the Curriculum Committee and the Board, but the State Chancellor’s Office requests additional information, the originator has four contract weeks to respond to the curriculum specialist or the item will be rejected.
