(August 20, 2024) Marysville, Calif. – This fall, as students worked their way through the application and registration processes at Yuba College (YC), they may have met one of four new Student Success Specialists hired at YC to coach students as they navigate the state’s application called CCCApply and the steps to register for classes at YC.
In 2020, Yuba College reviewed data on the progression of students from application to registration in classes and recognized a clear need for more assistance with the application process to signing up for classes.
Through its strategic planning process in 2021, YC outlined specific strategies to support students based on best practices in the state and the nation at community colleges. One of those key strategies was employing four student success specialist help students more successfully transition from applicant to registered student, in line with the college’s mission of open access.
“A majority of our students are first-generation college students who are trying to figure out financial aid applications, online class registration, and more steps for the first time,” President Tawny Dotson explained. “These students may not have someone at home who can explain terms like FAFSA or navigate the residency process and often need someone to answer quick questions. Our Student Success Specialists were added to our staff to improve the conversion rate of students who apply and then register by providing more direct support to students who are struggling with the college admissions process. The specialists’ support will continue after registration to connect those students with resources as they continue toward completion.”
Student Success Specialist Maria Ruiz explained that she and the team of Specialists offer guidance tailored to each student’s needs to help them stay on track with their educational plans.
“We are eager to work with students individually to help them navigate college. We are here to guide them through signing up for the classes they need, connect them with financial aid, and help them find the services and resources that they may not know are available.”
Vice President Tonia Teresh said that having these Specialists available can ease the nerves people naturally feel when deciding whether pursuing higher education is
the right path for them.
“Our college is open for them to come and ask questions and explore. The Specialists are going to be exactly the right people to talk to. They really exemplify that desire to help students, to help break down barriers, and make things really understandable for them,” said Teresh.
Ruiz added, “We have all had our own experiences with college and know how overwhelming it can be. We are here to help support students, answer questions, and walk each person through the process of attending college.”
The Student Success Specialists stepped into their roles in May 2024 and have already left a positive mark on both current and incoming students.
Following an appointment, YC student Ivan Ruiz expressed his appreciation for his specialist’s one-on-one guidance. “It was a comforting and encouraging experience that I will never forget.
Their kindness and dedication have made a significant impact on my career path.” Maria Ruiz stressed that making students feel empowered is what drives her.
“I want to make a difference for our students. I want to make sure that all students that come to the counseling office and to Yuba College feel supported, connected, and welcomed.”
