(October 4, 2024) Marysville, Calif. – On Friday, October 11, counselors from the Yuba-Sutter area will visit Yuba College for the annual counselors workshop designed to build collaboration amongst college and high school counselors in the college’s service district.

Yuba College works closely with regional high schools to ensure students are aware of local post-secondary options. Counselors who attend are provided with the latest updates on Yuba College academic programs and student resources and are given opportunities to build relationships with the Yuba College counselors and staff.

When a local student begins his or her journey at Yuba College, they can seamlessly integrate thanks to the unique liaison structure the institution has with each of the high schools in its service area. During this particular event, Yuba College counselors will meet with those corresponding high school counselors to learn how best to strengthen that partnership.

Dean of Student Development Dr. King Xiong said these events are key in maintaining a strong partnership with the area high school leaders and the families they serve.

“This conference is an opportunity for our Yuba College counselors to understand the perspectives of our high school counseling partners, such as frequent questions that arise for high school students about Yuba College, how Yuba College servicesare communicated to students at the high school level,” Xiong said. “Our Yuba College counselors can identify if there are any knowledge gaps between the high school and college levels, and provide clarity or insight into our processes and services.”

High school counselors attending the conference will learn about Yuba College’s dual enrollment opportunities, changes to the financial aid application process, cash for college workshops and student support programs. Specifically, Yuba College offers support programs for diverse populations, including students with disabilities, first-generation college students, low-income, STEM-focused, foster youth and more.

“At Yuba College, we want our incoming students to be prepared and confident about their academic potential here,” Xiong said. “This conference provides detailed information and updates to the high school counselors who work with high school students every day. The goal is to provide the most updated information to high school partners who can then work directly with graduating seniors.”
