New softball field opens at Yuba College

(October 14, 2024) Marysville, Calif. – The reigning Golden Valley Conference softball champs have a brand new place to hang their hats (and gloves).

Yuba College recently debuted its new, revitalized softball field in a new location, now in the open space between the stadium and the west parking lot. The 49ers new field now meets
accessibility standards and allows for greater safety, security and overall improved support for student-athletes.

Coach Brian Seva, head coach for Yuba College Softball, thanked Yuba College President Dr. Tawny Dotson, Athletic Director Erick Burns for working hard to bring this project to fruition and taxpayers for their support.

“We are so beyond excited to get on this new field. We’ve been staring at it for a long time without access so to say we are antsy is an understatement,” Seva said. “We are grateful for the opportunity to play on this new field. This investment into our program is giving us great confidence in the future of Yuba College Softball.”

The hope is the new facilities will help continue to draw softball talent to the institution, said Burns. While there are many talented players in the area, there are many community college options.

“One of the important aspects of a recruit’s decision when being recruited is the aesthetic of the college, and the functionality of the athletic facility,” said Burns. “Having the campus recently painted with added signage and banners around campus, plus the mural on the theatre – these are all a part of that improved look and feel of the college along with the softball facilities.”

The new field improves the overall look and feel of that corner of campus and will better serve the community experience when fans come to football games, soccer matches, and track meets.

“I think it is important to keep in mind that while the look and usability of the campus is important to the students and their educational experience, the theatre and the athletic facilities are frequently visited by the community in general,” he said. “These kinds of updates have the potential to have a widespread impact on the community.” Seva emphasized how the new facilities are more good news for the softball team, which is coming off a big win last season.

“We won the GVC in our first year and beat multiple schools in the Big 8. We will be even stronger this year. Combine all of that with top-of-the-line facilities and you can see why we are so optimistic,” said Seva. “I cannot wait to show this field off to our new recruits.”

The prioritization of this project was supported by Yuba College through its participative governance process. This project was largely funded through local general obligation bond funding, thanks to the taxpayers in Yuba College’s service area.
