General Information
Where is the College Success Center?
The College Success Center is located just inside the main doors to the Learning Resource
Center (Building 1100) on the Yuba College campus. We also offer online tutoring.
What are the College Success Center hours?
Regular Hours: Monday through Thursday, 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM and Fridays from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
Summer semester: Monday through Thursday, 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
Who may receive College Success Center services?
Any student who is registered at Yuba College may receive College Success Center services at no cost.
What services are available?
The College Success Center offers scheduled group tutoring, drop-in tutoring, computer and wifi access, group study areas, test reviews, and final examination reviews.
How can I access these services?
To receive services from the College Success Center, complete a Request for Services (RFS)
Form online. Please complete one form per course. We will reach out via email within 24 to 72 hours. If you are requesting scheduled tutoring, please call us at (530) 741-6759 if you have been contacted by us in three working days.
How often are scheduled tutoring sessions?
Scheduled tutoring sessions consist of 50-minute sessions, two times a week or more depending on availability of tutor. Nearly all sessions follow a Monday and Wednesday or a Tuesday and Thursday schedule. The sessions meet at the same time each day: for example- Mondays and Wednesdays from 10:00 to 10:50
AM.
What is the format of the tutoring sessions?
The CSC offers scheduled group tutoring sessions to facilitate “active” learning so students become more independent learners. These groups are comprised of a specially trained tutor and a small cohort of students enrolled in the same class. The group meets twice weekly throughout the semester. All students are required to be prepared, to fully participate and to be engaged in each and every session. Tutors are trained to facilitate the session, not to dispense answers, so students must take an active role in their education.
The activities during each session are designed to support what is being taught in the classroom. The tutor clarifies concepts and addresses specific questions for improved understanding. Tutees are expected to complete all homework assignments in preparation for their next session as the homework is often reviewed and discussed at that time. The tutor also coaches students in preparation for exams.

What happens in a typical session?
A typical tutoring session consists of one tutor and three or four students. The session is based
on collaborative learning, so everyone is expected to participate. Common activities include reviewing or previewing course skills and concepts, practice in applying course skills and concepts, and preparing for tests.
What if I can’t attend regular sessions?
Research clearly supports the value of regular engagement in course content. However, if you
cannot attend scheduled sessions, we offer other services that do not require regular
attendance: Drop-in Math Tutoring, study areas (when available), and test reviews.
What are final review sessions?
Each semester, just before final exams, the CSC collaborates with faculty to schedule review sessions in preparation for final exams each semester. These review sessions occur prior to and during the week of finals and are facilitated by tutors. A minimum number of students must sign up for the sessions as they are intended to be small group collaboration. Ask your tutor or instructor about the possibility of a final review session for your course. The Final Review Sessions are open to all students enrolled in the class.

How do I become a tutor?
Our tutoring staff is efficient, well-trained, friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable. A tutor at the CSC must possess the following qualifications and characteristics to be employed:
- Have an overall 3.00 grade point average (GPA) or higher
- Pass the course they wish to tutor with an A
- Be recommended or approved by the faculty
- Complete an intensive tutor training program (Education 20)
- Be registered in 6 or more units at Yuba College
- Be committed to student success

How much do tutors get paid?
College Success Center tutors start at minimum wage. University-level tutors will have a different pay scale. All raises are subject to improvements in tutoring abilities.
What kind of schedule do tutors work?
Tutor work schedules are absolutely flexible. Some College Success Center tutors work as little
as four hours a week. Others work as many as 20 hours a week. Tutors set their own
schedules. Nearly all sessions follow a Monday and Wednesday or a Tuesday and Thursday
schedule. The sessions meet at the same time each day: for example- Mondays and
Wednesdays from 10:00 to 10:50 AM. By regulation, tutors may not work more than 20
hours a week for Yuba College.
Why should I become a tutor?
Most College Success Center tutors become a tutor because they gain satisfaction from and
enjoy helping others learn a particular field of study in a supportive environment. Tutors also
maintain or cultivate their knowledge of the subject matter, learn new job skills, gain employment experience and get paid at the same time.
What are the expectations of tutors?
The College Success Center expects the tutors to be hardworking and dedicated to promoting
learning. Tutor behavior will be professional and respectful- a reflection of our educational
philosophy. We view tutors for what they are, Yuba College employees, and expect them to
conduct themselves accordingly.
Faculty Information
How do I get a tutor for my class?
Getting a tutor for your class(es) is easy. First, evaluate the need. This should be done by the
end of each semester. Did a majority of the students struggle with the material? If so, this is
an indicator that collaborative learning may be beneficial. Second, consider students who completed the class with an A grade as potential tutors. Does the student possess the
qualities you believe would project well in a collaborative learning environment? Do they
demonstrate exceptional interpersonal skills? Third, forward the name(s) of these student(s) to
Ms. Quy Bui (Math Tutoring Facilitator) or Riley Frederking (Content Tutoring Facilitator.) We will
evaluate the student’s qualifications and contact you regarding their eligibility.
How many tutors will I need?
The number of tutors a class might need is primarily based on the number of students that
historically needed assistance and the availability of the tutors. To assist in your planning,
consider that we prefer our collaborative learning groups to consist of four to six students, so if,
historically, about twelve of your students need help, this will constitute at least three groups.
If your tutor wants to tutor six to eight hours a week, we most likely will be able to
accommodate most, if not all of the students who need help.
What kinds of training will my tutor receive?
College Success Center tutors receive at least eighteen hours of formal training through the
Education 20 (Tutoring Seminar) class, and ongoing mentoring, evaluation and continuing
training from the Instructional Associates. Among the topics covered in the formal training are
learning modalities, Dr. Ross MacDonald’s Tutoring Cycle, Bloom’s Taxonomy, college-level
study skills, and planning effective tutoring sessions.
What can I do to assist?
Faculty cooperation and support for the College Success Center is essential for the success
and retention of students. We welcome full faculty participation in the form of leading test
reviews or mentoring tutors. Most of all, recommending tutors for your classes in a timely
manner greatly improves the efficiency and success of students who utilize our services.
Faculty are our greatest resource, so we also welcome your input and feedback. Feel free to let
us know how we might be able to best serve you and your students.
What will my tutor be able to do?
College Success Center tutors primarily facilitate collaborative learning groups. They are
trained to foster an environment in which self-learning is highly valued and to guide students to
the answers. Tutors do not provide answers to assignments. A secondary objective is to model
college-level study skills to the students. By transferring these skills, students will improve
their academic performance in all subjects. Finally, tutors also integrate appropriate test
preparation strategies into their sessions. The combination of these three components will
create the opportunity for greater pass rates and foster retention.
